The guys who did Trivial Persuit (Horn Abbot) are from Toronto, and I can assure you that people there refer to the 7 bright starts as the big dipper - BUT..... The constellation ursa major is NOT the big dipper. The big dipper is the 7 bright stars that make up the tail and body of the bear. If the question had been "what is the common name for the seven brightest stars of ursa major", the answer would be the big dipper.
