[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] simtel20

nguyenn@ouareau.iro.umontreal.ca (Ngoc-Thong Nguyen) (04/16/89)

Hello,

I've read some messages talking about SIMTEL20 and ftp.
I'm new here and I want to know how to access to SIMTEL20
via ftp. When I'm in ftp, I've tried to open SIMTEL20 but
the system answers "Unknown host". Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I have a question.... I have managed to get some files down from
SIMTEL20 but I don't seem to have the program to uncompress them
... can someone please tell me what I need to do this?

Can some kind and generous soul out there please post an example
SIMTEL20 session where they grab a text file, a uuencoded file,
a MSDOS executable file and an archived file.

First of all, "text" and "uuencoded" files are really the same (ASCII);
and MSDOS executables and archives are similarly the same (binary). So
there are really only two situations to worry about -- ASCII and binary.

Assuming your own machine that you're running FTP on is a UNIX system,
you should give the command "ascii" before retrieving ASCII files, and
give the command "tenex" before retrieving binary files.

If you're going to do a "dir" command, you have to be in "ascii" mode.
Some versions of FTP will automatically switch into "ascii" mode, do the
"dir", and then switch back into whatever mode you were in before doing
the "dir" command; others will not, and in such a case you will have to
switch modes by hand.

Be *very* careful *NEVER* to use the "bin" (binary transfer mode) com-
mand when talking to SIMTEL20. Unless your own machine happens to be a
DECsystem-20 or DECsystem-10, anything you transfer from SIMTEL20 in the
"bin" mode will be garbled junk once you get it.

Directory (or subdirectory) names on SIMTEL20 are of the form

	    dev:<dir> or dev:<dir.subdir>

The punctuation (colon, angle brackets, and period) are crucial. Case
(upper/lower) is not significant. There is no way (that I'm aware of,
at least) to abbreviate these directory names when jumping between sub-
directories of the same device and directory; you just have to type the
entire name of the new directory in a subsequent "cd" command.

So, after FTP'ing to SIMTEl20 (wsmr-simtel20.army.mil) and doing an
anonymous login (user "anonymous", any password), you should use the
following kinds of command sequences as appropriate:

TO GET AN ASCII FILE:

		    ascii
		    cd pd1:<msdos.starter>
		    get sharewre.txt

TO GET A BINARY FILE:

		    tenex
		    cd pd1:<msdos.zip>
		    get pkz102.exe

Finally, if you're retrieving multiple files of the same type in a row,
you don't need to keep repeating the "ascii" or "tenex" commands. Also,
if you're retrieving multiple files from the same subdirectory, you
don't need to issue identical "cd" commands in succession. All of these
commands need only be given when something is changing.

Well I finnaly logged on to the Simtel20 army base site, and lets put it
this way. I'm lost. I gave it the usual dir command and got a listing of
what looked to be some text files, but I couldn't change to any directory
and I couldn't get any of the files to look at. Do you have to be a
registered user to use this site, or what am I doing wrong?

I have been accessing the MSDOS things through a trickle-server. I did
not know these other directories even existed. Not doing FTP, I have
no idea how to access the anon. FTP login directory.

How does one access these .INFO and .DIRLIST files from the trickle-server?

Hello world. How does on connect to SIMTEL20 with only UUCP? Is it possible?
I am located off UUNET as my main node. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Sites connected to uunet should use the following address:

    uunet!vm1.nodak.edu!listserv

Send email to that address with the following in the body of the
message:

GET PDGET HELP
/PDGET MAIL PD:<MSDOS.FILEDOCS>SIMIBM.ARC UUENCODE

Note the first command above has no slash at the start. The second
does. The first command will get complete instructions on how to get
SIMTEL20 files via email. The second command gets our MSDOS index.

Do not include a signature because it confuses the server.

Well, I've had no trouble here at the University of Adelaide.
I logged into simtel20 earlier today ( Friday February 15. )

Good luck. ( maybe you havn't been paying your bills :-) )

To get files from simtel20, you first need to get the ftpbin.exe from
Clarkson, then ftp to simtel20

     ftp simtel20.army.mil
     login anonymous
     password (your id)

If you get a directory of the root (dir) there will be a file with
a list of MSDOS subdirectories, get it using

get remotefilename.ext localfilename.ext {the last digit is not necessary,
                                                and localfilename is optional}

You can use ! to get a shell to look at the directory file.

To change to a subdirectory, I found that you need to use the
quote function

     quote
     cd pd1:<msdos.education>

You then can get the file 00-index.txt, or you can use the dir command
to list files.

for binary files (almost anything that does not have a .txt extention)
you need to use the binary mode

     binary

The hash function is also useful to see the progress of the file transfer.

     hash

To get multiple files, you can use mget

     mget

That's because some ftp client programs take the angle brackets as
redirects instead of commands. SIMTEL20 will accept square brackets
instead of angle brackets. Try this:

cd pd1:[msdos.education]

I think you'll find it works without having to use the quote command.
