[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Can I ....

khwang@cse.uta.edu (khwang) (05/10/91)

Hello computer gurus,

I have 2 questions for you.
1. How can I change my drive when I download my data from mainframe to
PC using PROCOMM ? The default drive is A which is intolerrably slow.

2. Do we have a fast way to transfer binary file using PROCOMM ?
Currently I use Kermit to transfer binary file via PROCOMM, it is TOOOOO
slow !!!!

Thank you all in advance !

Press F4 to shell out to DOS, change to the drive and directory you
want to download. Type 'exit' to go back to procomm and start downloading.

I assume you are using Procomm, not Procomm Plus. If you have zmodem
(get it from simtel), you can issue 'sz -r filename' on the host and
then press F4 and type dsz rz (to activate zmodem).

Or use MS-Kermit (what I usually do), set the receive-packet-length
to 512 or 1024 and download the file with kermit. This would speed up
the processs considerably.
The problem with Procomm's kermit is that it is fixed (I believe it is 98).
The other thing ... MS-Kermit is free, while Procomm is shareware.
(Don't forget to pay).

If only MS-Kermit has a crash recovery ...

Procomm setup has a download directory entry. Just put the disk drive letter
in front of the directory (with the colon of course).

I use Ymodem but it depends on what your mainframe supports. If Kermit is
order of magnitude too slow, then you need to get a faster modem.

My /pc/ts/tspfon29.arc has quite a lot of information about Procomm.
Try if that is any help.
