bip. Not a Lyrics Quiz: The MEMBERS OF ROCK GROUPS QUIZ! ANSWERS! I was very pleased with this quiz. I got a _LOT_ of responses, and they were all interesting. First: The winners! SCORE Account Name 33 masscomp!trb (Andy Tannenbaum) 34 bolton!alvey 45 mddc.UUCP!john 59 ihuxn!dak 77 ihuxw!tommyo (Tom O'connor) 80 hound!gus 86 wivax!ss (Sid) 121 tilt!stern (Hal Stern) 122 ccvaxa!rossen (Ken Rossen) 129 ihnp4!hopd3!dvw (Diane Wilkerson) 132 pyuxn!rlr (Rich Rosen) 152 cbscc.UUCP!bet 163 ihuxb!irish (Laura Fehlberg) 165 ihscvax!carson (Cameron Carson) 195 inmet!andrew (Andrew W. Rogers) I've gotten a couple of responses since I did the grading, but I'm afraid it's too late to integrate them. Sorry. Our BIG and I do mean BIG winner is, as you can see Andrew W. Rogers, who, I am convinced, knows EVERYTHING about musicians. Now, here are the answers. Comments by me are in /* * */ type things. /* * Since this quiz is on the MEMBERS of rock groups, and * membership changes (e.g., KISS, WINGS, etc.), I chose * what I felt to be the membership of the band in its * "heyday", e.g. Eagles during Hotel California -- Long Run, * etc. */ 1. What do the following three rock groups have in common: Van Halen, The Beach Boys, Duran Duran ANSWER: All three bands have sets of brothers in them: VAN HALEN: Alex & Eddie Van Halen BEACH BOYS: Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson DURAN DURAN: Roger Taylor, Andy Taylor, John Taylor /* * There is a controversy as to whether the three Taylors * in Duran Duran are actually related. Andrew Rogers, * our big winner, says that they aren't, and that's * according to Casey Kasem -- on the other hand, they * sure look alike! If they aren't related, change the * answer to "all have members with the same last name" * (I gave credit for either answer). */ 2. Name at least four drummers in famous Rock bands who have died tragically. Keith Moon of the Who, overdosed Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, drowned John Bonham of Led Zepplin, suffocated Al Jackson Jr, of Booker T & the MG's, stabbed /* * Also mentioned in various answers were: * Dave Honeyman-Scott of the Pretenders * Jimmy McCullough of Wings * Karen Carpenter * "the guy from the Rolling Stones" * But I am pretty sure none of the above are drummers. */ 3. What unusual thing does Queen have in common with Duran Duran? Both have drummers named Roger Taylor 4. Expand these initials: Members of the E.J.B.: E.J., B.T., D.M., D.J., N.O., C.Q. Elton John Band: Elton John, Bernie Taupin, Dee Murray, Davey Johnstone, Nigel Olson, Caleb Quaye /* * Everyone who attempted this got E.J., B.T., and N.O. correct. * I don't know why everyone knew Nigel Olson, but they did. * Caleb Quaye was definitely the least known, but he was only * with the band for a couple of albums in the Caribou-Rock of * the Westies period. Diane Wilkerson got 1/2 credit for * remembering that "whoever C.Q. was, he was black". */ 5. The following are the first names of the members of some rock groups. Name the groups. Some of these are just too easy to be true. For extra credit, give the last names. For tons of extra credit, name the instrument that each plays/played. (Note: I don't know all the answers to that last part) /* * I don't claim that the list of instruments in this section * is complete. */ Gene, Paul, Peter, Ace Kiss: Gene Simmons, Bass Paul Stanley, Guitar Peter Criss, Drums Ace Frehley, Guitar Freddy, Roger, John, Brian Queen: Freddy Mercury: vocals, keyboards Roger Taylor: drums John Deacon: guitar Brian May: bass, vocals Bingo, Fleegle, Drooper, Snorky The Banana Splits Bingo, Gorilla, bass Fleegle, Lion, keyboards Drooper, Dog, guitar Snorky, Elephant, drums John, Paul, George, Ringo The Beatles: John Lennon, Keyboards, rhythm guitar, harmonica, vocals Paul McCartney, Keyboards, bass, vocals George Harrison, Lead guitar, sitar, vocals Ringo Starr, Drums, vocals Jackie, Marlon, Tito, Jermaine, Michael, Randy The Jacksons: Jackie Jackson, vocals Marlon Jackson, vocals Tito Jackson, guitar, vocals Jermaine Jackson, vocals, bass Michael Jackson, vocals Randy Jackson, congas John, George, Richard, James /* * This was a trick question. Two people got it, though. */ The Beatles: John Lennon George Harrison Richard Starkey [Ringo Starr] James P. McCartney [Paul McCartney] /* * see instruments above */ Mike, Dennis, Carl, Brian, Al The Beach Boys: Mike Love: vocals, sax Dennis Wilson: drums Carl Wilson: guitar Brian Wilson: keyboards, everything Al Jardine: vocals Dean, Jan Jan & Dean: Dean O. Torrance: vocals (high) Jan Berry: vocals (low) Glenn, Don, Joe, Don The Eagles: Glenn Frey: vocals, guitar Don Henley: vocals, drums Joe Walsh: vocals, guitar Don Felder: bass /* * A lot of people knew this was the Eagles, * but almost no one knew who the second Don * was. */ Paul, Denny, Joe, Jimmy, Linda Wings: Paul McCartney: bass, vocals Denny Laine: guitar, vocals Joe English: drums Jimmy McCullough: guitar Linda Eastman McCartney: keyboards, vocals, wife Mike, Davey, Micky, Peter The Monkees: Mike Nesmith: guitar, vocals Davey Jones: vocals, tambourine Micky Dolenz: drums, vocals Peter Tork: guitar, banjo, bass, vocals /* * Everyone got this next entry except for * Rich Rosen, who seemed confused by the * question. */ Archie, Reggie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead The Archies: Archie Andrews: vocals, guitar Reggie Mantle: guitar Betty Cooper: background vocals, tambourine Veronica Lodge: background vocals, keyboards Jughead Jones: drums /* * So let's see what the most recognized groups are: * In a three-way tie for first place: * The Beatles, The Jacksons, and The Monkees, all of whom * were recognized by everyone who asnwerd the quiz. * Next, comes another three-way tie: * Kiss, The Beach Boys and the Archies. * I think that in the case of the Archies, Kiss, and the Jacksons * their recognizability is due a lot to the unusual first names * involved (Ace, Jughead, Tito). * Wings was recognized by 13 of the 15 respondants. The Eagles by * 12. * And the most obscure groups in the quiz: * Queen, and The Banana Splits, each of which only had 10 * responses. It's a sorry day in musicland when Kiss is more * recognized than Queen! * If I do another one of these, I think I'll get a little more * obscure.... */ 6. By what names are the following people better known: Richard Starkey Ringo Starr Reginald Dwight Elton John David Jones David Bowie Ross Bagdasarian David Seville /* I gave 1/2 credit to people who answered * "Alvin & The Chipmunks", which is also * correct, but not as good an answer */ Bernard Schwarz Tony Curtis /* * Quite a number of people knew the answer to this * one, but they all wanted to know why Tony Curtis * was in a quiz about the members of Rock Groups. */ 7. Famous guest stars. What famous guest artist(s): played harmonica on Keith Green's "So You Wanna Go Back to Egypt"? Bob Dylan played violin on Elton John's "Amy" (from "Honky Chateau")? Jean-Luc Ponty sang backup on Neil Sadaka's "Bad Blood"? Elton John backed up the Moody Blues on "Days of Future Passed"? London Festival Orchestra /* * Only ONE person knew this! I got about 10 * responses that thought it was the * London Symphoney Orchestra * or the London Philharmonic Orchistra. */ joined Queen for "Under Pressure"? David Bowie backed up Fleetwood Mac on "Tusk"? USC Trojan marching band /* * I gave no credit to those who thought it * was the Ohio State marching band, or the * UCLA marching band. So I'm a tough grader. */ jammed with the Beatles on the "rooftop" concert? Billy Preston /* * This question gets the award for the most * "gosh, I should know this one" answers. * 1/2 credit went to Cameron Carson for creativity -- * He answered "The Rutles :-)" */ Thanks to all who responded. I may have a new quiz out in a month or two if I get a new news site to write from. Aloha. -Glenn

Just a quick correction -- Brian May of Queen plays guitar, not bass. David Wexelblat (...decvax!ittvax!wxlvax!dwex)

Actually, in the commercial for the Carpenter's greatest hits, you do see Karen tapping on a drum. -Ron
