[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] cwp, thx & problem

koerber.sin@sni.de (Mathias Koerber) (06/20/91)

Thx, I got part 16. Anybody who hasn't got it yet may mail me (not so
many please), but I'd rather you get it from somewhere else, because
my link is rather expensive.

I have one other problem though:

I unnzoo'd cwp in drive C, make sys, copied all other files into sys and
started cwp. Works fine so far. Then I decided to copy it to diskette to
use it on another PC which has a printer. But, it shows the titlepage, and
then:
Can't find base font. program aborted.
I bring it back to the original PC, and run it there, (from A:), same thing.
It runs from C, but not from A:. I observed that it accesses C on the other
PC to look for something. But i dunno what.

Anobody have an idea?

One more thing: There isn't any notice about registration etc in the cwp.zoo
file. Can someone please clarify the status of the program. Otherwise I'll
assume it is PD :-)

From the CPW documentation, CWP is available by anonymous FTP from;

ahkcus.org in the directory /src/pc/cwp

I have not tried to FTP it to my machine though.

CWP changes the attributes of a file in the SYS directory to system when you
first run it. When you coppied the files to a floppy, the file with
the system bit set would not be copied. That is why it would not run
elsewhere. You may have to copy from the original .ZOO file. Alternatively,
if you have PCTOOLS (or any other file manager like tools which can handle
hidden files), use PCTOOLS to copy the hidden file.

As I understood from CWP documentation posted here earlier on, CWP is a demo
version of a commercial product. I quote the doccumentation, "The only
difference between the demo version and the full version is the size of a
file being edited is limited to about 1000 bytes (500 Chinese characters)
with the demo version."

[Hope this helps.]
----------

As an aside, I have not been able to find any mention of how to contact the
authors, so I will have to post this observation here instead of sending
email:

a) I do not see why one of the font files have to be protected with a
set system bit. If this is a demo program, one should be able to
    copy it easily.

b) It sometimes crashes when I type fast. Sometimes, it goes into a funny.
The only way to get out of this mode is to quit the program and start
    again.

Does anyone know when cwp v2.0 is coming out? :-)

I tried the posted version, which seems to allow more than 1000 bytes
(at least editing, I dunno about saving). The docs say the FTPable version
is demo. Maybe the author posted the real thing by mistake?. Nevertheless,
the intro shows a copyright (in Chinese :-)).

By the end of this year, I hope. It depends on how much time I can
squeeze out of the composition of my Ph.D. dissertation on a totally
different subject--theoretical linguistics :=(
