[comp.binaries.ibm.pc.d] Zip-splitter

mrs@netcom.COM (Morgan Schweers) (06/29/91)

Greetings,
I threw together a zip-splitter myself which uses as little disk space
as possible. I used it to split a 10Meg zip file onto 3.5" HD disks.
(My problem was that all the zip-splitters at the time required lots and
lots of disk space to play with. On a 20Meg partition, w/ 5Megs used,
and another 10M for the ZIP file, I couldn't use any of them!)

The program I have is loosely based on the idea behind the FILL
program. It reads the 'disk free' space on the drive you're moveing
the ZIP file to, and offloads exactly enough files to fill that
disk. It then prompts you for another disk until you're done.

I use this to do backups w/ PKZIP. The resultant ZIP's are still
completely readable, making it easy for me to restore particular files.

What I'm interested in finding out is if anyone else's program
does this. (An example, the largest amount of space the 10Meg ZIP file
needed for temporary space was about 30K at one time.) If not, I'll
make my program available. It'd be psuedo-limited freeware. The source
included, etc. If it saves your ass one day because you did backups
with it, I'd ask for a postcard or $5, whichever is easier. *grin*

So, in effect, my question is whether this program would be a
useful one for anyone out there? (Or am I the only person who uses
PKZIP for backups?)
