Subject: FORTRAN simulation routines

Does anyone have knowledge or access to a set of FORTRAN subroutines
which implements a basic simulation engine (time keeping and event
scheduling, random variate generation, etc.)? I was reading about
some PASCAL implemtations in the Winter 87 Simulation Conference and
thought surely someone had done it in FORTRAN.

My motivation in asking the question about scheduling/unscheduling was
that I would like to reason about programs written using the
discrete-event technique. As these concepts are associated with it,
whether or not they form part of the "main model", it is essential to know
what is their semantics, i.e. deeper purpose.

For example, a natural question is whether it is possible to schedule only
those events which would never be unscheduled? If not, why not?

As I mentioned previously, we have developed a new formalism called DMOD
in which concepts of scheduling/unscheduling and event queues are shown to
be logically dispensable. However, it seems to successfully capture the
intuitions captured by the discrete-event technique. Furthermore, it can
represent states which change gradually over time, such as position.
State changes need not be discrete.

In the light of DMOD we believe that scheduling and unscheduling are
methods of enforcing the logic of abstract causality rules which refer to
the future of causing events. If this is so, these more declarative
rules can directly form the simulation program (as is the case in DMOD).

Regards.

CALL FOR DISCUSSION ON CREATING COMP.INFORMATIONSYSTEMS

The field of INFORMATION SYSTEMS at the moment does not
have it's own forum for discussion. Not only is it
missing on USENET, also on other networks an area for
discussions and exchange on topics like design of
information systems, decision support systems,
organizational impact of information systems,
support tools for designing information systems, research
methods in information systems, information planning,
etc. is lacking.

After consulting Henk Sol, Ralph Sprague and Gordon Davis
and several other researchers in the field of IS we have
come to the conclusion that we should try to create such a
discussion area. In our view this discussion area should
be COMP.INFORMATIONSYSTEMS. It should be part of the COMP
tree, because we are talking about computerized information
systems.

In our view the area should be MODERATED, in order to be
able to filter out the postings that have nothing to do
with information systems. Moderation means just filtering,
appropriate postings will appear unchanged. Moderation
will be performed by Alexander Verbraeck and
Folkert W. Wierda at Delft University of Technology,
Department of Information Systems.

This discussion on creating COMP.INFORMATIONSYSTEMS
starts at July 6, and will continue till August 5. At
that same day a call for votes will be posted, that
continues till September 5. Please remember that all
contributions to this discussion should be posted to
news.groups.

For any further questions and suggestions about the
proposed newsgroup it is also possible to contact us
by E-mail.

Subject: volunteers wanted

Are there any volunteers out there who would like to do the following
for the digest?

  (1) Condense news stories connected with simulation. Especially from
magazines such as Discover, Sci. American, Science, NewsWeek,
      Time, etc.

  (2) Provide book reviews on simulation related topics.

  (3) A quote from someone's book that has lasting significance.

  (4) A list of Ph.D. dissertations and M.S. theses connected with
      simulation.

  (5) A list of bibliography citations (preferably in the form used
by LATEX and Scribe) for a special subtopic.

  (6) A review on a simulation software package.

I'm sure that I have missed out a lot! If you have any ideas, please
send them in! Electronic news groups have the potential to become
on-line publications in their own right. Pictures can be included
eventually when this medium becomes more tractable. In the mean time,
we can copy the way that current magazines and journals do things
(with departments and sections...).
