joe@petsd.UUCP (Joe Orost) (02/08/85)

Ok trivia fans. Why do 45 rpm records have bigger center holes than 33's
and 78's ?

Gee, I don't know. I always thought it was because disk jockeys were
uncoordinated.

You got me there.....

1. Could it be that they are saving vinyl ?
2. They do not have to make the hole larger to put it on juke-boxes?

I too would like to know the answer as 45's in Great Britain (at least) have
the small hole as on LP's. The only large holes in singles that I had seen
(until I came over to the States) were in old juke-box singles.

It's my understanding that RCA (I think) tried to establish an "new standard"
by putting larger holes into records that went at a different speed.
Eventually, the new standard became the standard for singles only, and the
competitive standard (small holes at 33rpm) became the LP standard. Why were
78s abandoned? I'm not sure, but I can guess...you can't fit much onto
one...it goes too quickly.

You just wrote the answer. The holes in 45's are sized
to accomodate the crude juke boxes of the '50's, which
weren't accurate enough to stab the turntable spindle
through a small hole.
