-Looking for information regarding computer simulation application
software for modeling and analyzing microstrip lines, by using transmission
line techniques.
-Has anyone used any application programs for this purpose, specifically
Spice or Pspice? If so, could you please send information on models
used, parameters specified, flexibility of package, predictability
reliability of results, etc. Copies of models used and results would be useful.
-We are attempting to simulate a high-speed, Futurbus-type backplane,
and for this reason need a model that would accurately characterize the
backplane in terms of loaded/unloaded impedance and crosstalk. We would
like to be able to specify the physical parameters of the lines (ie.
width, spacing, dielectric, height), and line loading (in terms of distributed
or lumped capacitances, inductance, driver/receiver characteristics.)
Any information available on models, packages or experience in this area
would be appreciated.

Subject: Network simulation tools (ethernet models in particular)

X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.3 PL11]
I would like to announce two free simulation tools that are available
from our site. A while ago somebody inquired about an ethernet model; well,
the ethernet model is a trivial addition to these tools.
The tools I am talking about are LANSF (Software Practice and
Experience, vol. 21, no. 1, January 1991, pp. 51-76) and SMURPH (see the
Proceedings of 1991 Western Multi Conference on Object-Oriented Simulation,
Simulation Series, vol. 23, no.3, 1991, pp. 12-21). The second package is
brand new and no serious papers on it have been published yet. Below I
include a random excerpt from a technical report on SMURPH.
----
SMURPH is an object-oriented software package for modeling discrete events
in communication protocols. It can be viewed as both an implementation of a
certain protocol specification language and a process-driven simulator
oriented towards investigating medium access control (MAC) level protocols.
The structure of the simulator is completely invisible to the user.
All the simulation-related operations, as creating and scheduling
individual events, maintaining a consistent notion of time, etc.,
are covered by a high-level interface. A protocol description in SMURPH
looks like a program that could be executed on a hypothetical hardware.
SMURPH emulates this hardware and thus provides a realistic environment
for executing protocols described in its specification language.
Protocol execution in SMURPH can be monitored. One reason for monitoring the
behavior of a protocol is to investigate its performance by gathering empirical
data. Although SMURPH does not purport to be a protocol verification system
(it seems that no automated verification system of practical use can be built
today), it offers some tools for protocol testing. These tools, the so-called
observers, look like programmable dynamic assertions describing legitimate
sequences of protocol actions.
The protocol description language of SMURPH is essentially C++.
The standard data types, objects, functions, and macros provided by the
package extend this language substantially. With this approach, the user
gets the full power of C++ combined with the power of a realistic, emulated
environment for programming and executing communication protocols.
SMURPH descends from its predecessor, called LANSF which was designed and
implemented in 1987. LANSF was programmed in C and has evolved a number of
times from its original version. It has been successfully applied to
investigating the performance and correctness of a number of protocols for
local and metropolitan area networks and other distributed systems.
One disadvantage of LANSF was its low flexibility in describing compound data
structures. The idea of re-implementing LANSF in C++ was born from the
collaboration of the researchers from UofA with the networking group at the
Lockheed Space and Missile Company. At first, Objective C was tried, but
after a brief preliminary design we decided to use C++ instead. C++ seems to
capture all the essential features of Objective C, and at the same time is
devoid of some deficiencies of that language.
----
Both packages are available for free although we try to solicit a token and
voluntary contribution from the users -- to partially cover the maintenance
cost. SMURPH is still in a development stage, and I will welcome all
suggestions, bug reports, etc. It currently works with the GNU C++ compiler,
but I have already started adapting it to the AT&T cfront environment.
The packages are available from menaik.cs.ualberta.ca (129.128.4.241), files
"pub/lansf..." and "pub/smurph...", where "..." depends on the current
version of the product. They come with extensive documentation and examples
(Ethernet is among them).
For the people who have no ftp access, we can arrange for some other means of
transportation.

SIGGRAPH '91 Workshops Call for Participation
Workshop Overview
Workshops at the annual SIGGRAPH conference provide one- or two-day
forums for structured, but lively interchange of ideas among a small
group of people about issues important to the computer graphics
community. Issues may range from theoretical problems, to emerging
standards, to specialized applications areas.
Though the workshops themselves are by definition able to accomodate a
relatively small number of participants, the results of the workshop
discussions are reported to other conference attendees through
presentation and interaction at a special interest group session or
panel, and to the graphics community at large in "Computer Graphics",
published by the Association for Computing Machinery.
You are invited to submit a position paper on the workshop topics
listed below to the workshop organizers by May 17, 1991. Guidelines
for presenting the position papers, and a detailed description on how
the workshops are structured can be obtained from the organizers, or
from the workshop committee chair, also listed below. Please review
these guidelines carefully before submitting position papers. The
organizers will then select up to 25 participants for the workshop
from the papers submitted.
SIGGRAPH '91 will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from Sunday, July 28,
through Friday, August 2, 1991 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The SIGGRAPH '91 workshops committee and organizers look forward to
receiving your position paper for consideration.

Workshop #1 - Call for Participation
Integrating Computer Graphics, Computer Vision, and Image
Processing in Scientific Applications
29-30 July, 1991
Many engineering and scientific applications in medicine, biomedical
research, oil exploration and development, robotics, space exploration,
molecular modeling, etc., depend on the modeling and interpretation of
empirical data. In these applications, data are collected from several
different sources and combined into a model that contains both
geometric and nongeometric data. The model is then used for
measurement, for simulation, and for understanding the structure and
relationships that may exist among the data.
Although the sources of data for each of these applications are
different and specialized knowledge is necessary to interpret the data,
there is also a great of deal of commonality in the techniques used to
visualize, reconstruct, and interact with the data. The commonality
stems from the need of similar algorithms and techniques from the
fields of computer graphics, computer vision and image processing.
These common techniques range from image enhancement, feature
extraction, and reconstruction of 3D models from the extracted
features, to visualization of and interaction with the resulting
models, and model computation and simulation.
This workshop focuses on identifying the common algorithm
requirements in practical applications that integrate techniques from
computer graphics, computer vision, and image processing, and the
implications of the integration of these algorithms on computational
and architectural requirements. Problems in visualization and display
of multidimensional data, while important topics, will not be
considered alone unless they have demonstrated their efficacy as part
of a larger application.

Workshop #2 - Call for Participation
Computer Graphics in the Network Environment
28-29 July 1991
Because of current network limitations, many distributed computer
graphics applications, designed for or adapted to existing networks,
compromise function or interactivity. The premise of this workshop is
that future distributed application paradigms and the deployment of new
network technologies are closely connected, and both should be designed
with this relationship in mind. Participants will discuss current
models of distributed computer graphics/video for local and wide-area
networks and their limitations, and models for future applications
based on high bandwidth networks. Other topics are likely to include
data models, future requirements for network availability and
reliability, new network protocols, and developments in hardware
technologies for network protocol handling, image compression, and
HDTV.

Scope
The ESS 91 is composed of two parallel symposia around problem
investigation on the basis of simulation methodology. On the one
hand, simulation in the design and scheduling of intelligent
process control systems is focused, while on the other hand,
we look at simulation in the study of water resources systems and
global changes.
Intelligent Process Control Design and Scheduling
Conventional control system design methodology is based on,
detailed mathematical models of the physical system to be
controlled. In most instances, only approximate system models
with limited ranges of applicability are available for the design
process. Additional heuristic rules are used as an attempt to
describe the observed system behaviour.
The focus of the Symposium "Intelligent Control" (cognitive
control) refers to a control system which can learn, reason and
make judgements. The Symposium will deal with different
methodologies such as, Knowledge Based Simulation, AI Based
Pattern Recognition, Fault Trees, Knowledge Based Systems (Expert
Systems) and Neural Networks for Process Control and Scheduling.
All aspects are considered: Theory, Validation, Applications and
Performances.
The Symposium will also deal with information acquisition and
processing needed for supervision and diagnosis, temporal trend
identification, sensor data reduction and modelling.
Application issues of concern to this Symposium include:
- Process Monitoring and Control in chemical, nuclear and power
industries, biotechnological plants, etc...
- Computer Systems for Control like CEALMON, COOKER, FALCON,
ESCORT, MCM, PICON and G2.
- Systems relevant for product quality enhancement and
production process safety.
- Systems for scheduling in manufacturing processes and
production control.
- CIM in the process industries.
Modelling in Water Resources Systems and Global Changes.
1. Weather processes: modelling of rainfall fields in space and
time; heterogeneous media simulations, fractal properties,
multifractal nature and chaotic behaviour of rainfall; incor-
porating causal mechanisms into stochastic models.
2. Urban hydrology, management of sewer systems and waste dispos-
sal.
3. Integrated Water Quantity/Quality modelling, including leach-
ing models, surface impoundment models, modelling for irriga-
tion and drainage, decision support systems in surface and
groundwater management.
4. Global changes; modelling and control of greenhouse drift,
heavy metal and nitrate pollution.
