[comp.mail.sendmail] Who is this 'rc' guy, anyway?

After installing sendmail on our Masscomp 5600 running RTU 4.0,
I have observed a curious fact:  If sendmail runs as someone
other than one of the "trusted" users (root, uucp), his attempt
to determine the name of the person sending the mail fails,
because the name he gets back from 'getlogin()' is "rc".

By writing a simple test program, I have verified that the
getlogin() call itself works, at least when it isn't called by
sendmail.

Any ideas, suggestions, etc. would be welcome via E-mail.  If
possible, please mail responses to ...!cucstud!c3pe!charles and/or
...!inco!c3pe!charles, as our usual connection through decuac seems
to be broken right now, and we've received no news in several days.
