I am just now compiling Sendmail 5.59 and Bind 4.8 on several different systems here at the UofA (ATT 3B2/400 SysV R 3.1 and Harris HCX-3.0) and am wondering if the programs are configured to automatically default to checking the /etc/hosts file if the name server is unreachable (for any reason, including not configured into the system yet) ? I just got everything to compile and am checking and testing it out but I don't have a name server running yet. When I tried to send some mail to one of our local hosts, the mail was returned (error 550 Host Unknown). I compiled in the subroutines in the bind/res/named subroutine which look to me (at least on first inspection) like they try to automatically default to the /etc/host if it can't get a response from a sever, but I'm not positive about this. Could somebody please enlighten me on this? I have read through all the documentation and have not found this mentioned anywhere (I could have just forgot...a pointer would be helpful.....(it IS kind of a lot of documentation :-) ). I won't be able to work on it for a couple of days, so I thought that, while I'm waiting, I'd throw this question out to you super-smart Sendmail gurus out in NetLand and see what was up. SURELY you don't HAVE to have the Name Server running to get the new Sendmail to work, do you? Any help, suggestions, helpful criticisms are welcome! Thanks in advance! - David Summers (dws@cseg.uucp) P.S. - We're getting our official domain name REAL SOON NOW, which is why I'm working on this now, getting prepared!
