I am having a problem on my system and I think it is a problem configuration problem with sendmail (I believe it is 2.3). My system is an Interactive Systems UNIX V.3 version 1.0.5. There are two problems, the first is that any mail received to my normal account "jep" gets a header saying it is from "root", not by the actual name/address of the sender like it is on the system I used at my old place of employment. Here is a sample header. Everything from the the -'ed line down to the next -'ed line is exactly what appears in the mail. I hope the person who sent me the letter this header was attached to doesn't get offended. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 28 Oct 88 06:32:48 EDT From: root (Joseph E Poplawski ) Message-Id: <8810281032.AA15129@fantasci.UUCP> Apparently-To: jep Status: RO >From vsedev!uunet!ecsgate.uncecs.edu!dukeac!klg Wed Oct 26 13:55:05 1988 remote from tlxprs Received: by tlxprs.UUCP (smail2.3) id AA27700; 26 Oct 88 13:55:05 EDT (Wed) Received: by vsedev.vse.com (Smail-2.5) id AA04349; 26 Oct 88 12:15:43 EDT (Wed) Received: from ecsgate.uncecs.edu!dukeac by uunet.UU.NET (5.59/1.14) with UUCP id AA14388; Wed, 26 Oct 88 12:15:19 EDT From: uunet!ecsgate.uncecs.edu!dukeac!klg Received: from mcnc.mcnc.org by rutgers.edu (5.59/1.15) id AA25513; Wed, 26 Oct 88 11:39:18 EDT Received: by mcnc.mcnc.org (5.59/MCNC/5-16-88) id AA15213; Wed, 26 Oct 88 11:37:32 EDT Date: Wed, 26 Oct 88 11:37:32 EDT Message-Id: <8810261537.AA15213@mcnc.mcnc.org> Received: by ecsgate.uncecs.edu (smail2.5) id AA13067; 26 Oct 88 11:15:34 EDT (Wed) To: mcnc!rutgers!njin!princeton!njsmu!telesci!fantasci!jep@ecsgate.uncecs.edu Subject: Re: Security Mailing List Newsgroups: news.sysadmin In-Reply-To: <293@fantasci.UUCP> References: <398@island.uu.net> <5093@medusa.cs.purdue.edu> <5588@ecsvax.uncecs.edu> Organization: Academic Computing, Duke University, Durham, NC ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is there any way to configure sendmail to keep the From: as it was originally, so that when I enter mail and see the headers and subjects, not all my mail says from root? When I send mail to myself, the from name will be correct. My second question is how do I get sendmail to save/write a mail message from my mailbox to my directory with my current group "staff" and not the "mail" group? Well I think that that is about it for now. PLEASE reply to one of the bang paths below since my new map entry has not circulated yet and alot of mail gets bounced on its way here. I just recently found this out, so if you have tried to send mail to me or answer any of the other multitude of questions I post, I probably never received them. Thanks in advance to any who can help. -Jo ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Joseph E Poplawski (Jo) US Mail: 1621 Jackson Street | | Cinnaminson NJ 08077 | | UUCP:..!rutgers!rochester!moscom!telesci!fantasci!jep | | ..!princeton!telesci!fantasci!jep | | ..!pyrnj!telesci!fantasci!jep Phone: +1 609 786-8099 home | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | He who dies with the most toys wins! | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Copyright (C) 1988 Joseph E Poplawski All rights reserved. | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
