[comp.mail.sendmail] home delivery

rayan@ai.toronto.edu (Rayan Zachariassen) (11/14/88)

Has anyone, under any mailer, set a standard for which file name to use
when delivering mail to the recipients home directory? (I know about Rmail
formats, but what about UCB Mail format mailboxes?) If you care and
send me suggestions or gospel, I'll summarize to the net.

(you can ignore the rest...)

The present scheme with /usr/[spool/]mail reminds me of the Super Mailboxes
here in Canada. The theory was there would be one for every neighbourhood,
and people would drive up in their cars, roll down their window, open the
mailbox and grab their mail, then be off on their merry way.

Analogous to: logging in (on the way to work), typing Mail (going to the
neighbourhood mailbox stand), which locks the mailbox (the car acts as
a physical lock), retrieves the mail, then go off play glorified mux.

People are screaming for the good old days of home delivery.

I'd follow the MMDF standard of using $HOME/mailbox.
(MMDF can be configure to use /usr/spool/mail/$USER but that's
apparently much less common.)
