[comp.mail.sendmail] What EXACTLY is sendmail

Let me make a fool of myself here.

Once for all, what *exactly* is sendmail? Is it a public domain mailer agent
(like smail) or is it something related to BSD systems?

Please don't laugh too loud! :-)

Sendmail is a way of life.

Actually, it is a mail agent that comes with BSD; a program
that does SMTP and header munging (that's what it does best :-)
and a few more things.
