[comp.mail.sendmail] -odq vs. -odb in 5.61's rmail

vixie@decwrl.dec.com (Paul A Vixie) (02/16/89)

This is considered a plus in rmail because you will tend to get a lot of
rmail processes all at once after a UUCP neighbor calls up and dumps on
you. Having each one queue rather than deliver in background tends to
trim the CPU spike. If Ox and OX worked reliably, this wouldn't be nec'y.

Ok, so if -odb is a plus, wouldn't -odi be even better? With -odb you have to
wait until the hourly queue run before your mail is delivered. With -odi, the
mail is delivered immediately but uuxqt is held up until delivery is complete.
That solves your load average problem. It's the same technique normally used
by rnews, but sendmail takes only a tiny fraction of the time.
