[comp.mail.sendmail] Mail loop problem

lad@bub.UUCP (lad) (04/14/89)

I've been having a problem recently with incoming mail for my uid and machine
getting bounced back and forth between my mailhost and my machine. First, my
configuration.

The mailhost is a Sun 2/120 running sendmail as the 'sendmail.main.cf'
configuration. All other machines on the network, including mine, runs the
'sendmail.subsidiary.cf' configuration. Here are significant pieces of the
sendmail files. First, machine 'sdl', the mailhost:

----------
/usr/lib/sendmail.cf (/usr/lib/sendmail.main.cf) host: sdl (mailhost)

# You have two choices here. If you want the gateway machine to identify
# itself as the DOMAIN, use this line:
Dj$D.$U
# If you want the gateway machine to appear to be INSIDE the domain, use:
#Dj$w.$D.$U

[This choice was the default. Sounded good to me.]

# major relay mailer
DMuucp
# major relay host
DR uunet
CR uunet
# local domain names
DDsdl
CDsdl
# domain-spec for local domain within universe (eg, what domains are above?)
DUuucp

/usr/lib/sendmail.cf (/usr/lib/sendmail.subsidiary.cf) host: bub

# my official hostname
Dj$w.$D.$U
# major relay mailer
DMether
# major relay host
DRmailhost
CRmailhost
# local domain names
DDsdl
CDsdl
# domain-spec for local domain within universe (eg, what domains are above?)
DUuucp

---------

All machines are running yp, with the aliases database exported as a yp
database. My entry in /etc/aliases on the yp master server is:

lad: lad@bub

The yp master server is a Sun 3/180 running SunOS 4.0.1. My machine is a 3/60
running SunOS 4.0.1. The mailhost is a Sun 2/120 running SunOS 3.5.

Now for the problem. I've sent several test messages out and gotten them back
ok. Whenever someone mails to the path uunet!sdl!lad all seems to work fine.
The problem seem to be when someone tries to use the return path to my
machine, which is uunet!sdl!bub!lad. That's when the poop seems to hit the
air circulation device. Here's an example:

OK, that's the crux of the biscuit. If anyone has the foggiest idea of what's
going on and can help me fix it I'd be eternally in his/her debt. I've even
called Sun (we have Personal AnswerLine Service, fat lot of good it does...)
and my engineer is 'looking into in'.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.
