I am trying to install sendmail 5.61 and have a few questions relating to its configuration. I'd be glad for any comments. 1. What does the program called smail do? We do maintain the UUCP maps database here, and have a program called "uupath" which can expand UUCP paths using it. I was thinking of calling this program from sendmail.cf, to determine which neighbor to route UUCP mail to. Is there something additional that smail does? 2. Continuing on the same point, is it preferable to pass the expanded address to the neighbor, or rather the original address? 3. The sendmail configuration directories talk about a "smart" uucp, apparently one which can handle multiple recipients. What exactly does this mean? Is only one copy of the message spooled by uucp or sendmail? 4. Many of the rules seem to have formats of the sort R$-<@$+>$* (in machine dependent part of ruleset 0) on the left side. From RFC822, it seems that $- is the "local-part" and $+ represents the domain. What does the $* stand for? 5. There is a m4 definition called ARPAKLUDGE which if enabled, assumes that only hosts in the arpa domain don't use domain service yet. But aren't machines like sri-nic.arpa and gunter-adam.arpa the root servers? Or are these exceptions? Thanks for any replies. -- Govind N.
