Hello, We have two computers, both running sendmail, with an ethernet between them. Our problem is that we can't get sendmail to send mail over the ethernet. The ethernet mailer is defined as follows (on both machines): Mether, P=[IPC] F=uhnFDmIX, S=18, R=19, A=IPC $h # u Preserve upper case in user names for this mailer # h Preserve upper case in host names for this mailer # n Don't insert Unix "From" line # F This mailer wants a "From:" header line # D This mailer wants a "Date:" header line # m This mailer can send to multiple users at one call # I This mailer talks SMTP to another sendmail # X This mailer uses the hidden dot algorithm (rfc 821) The computers are: - a Sequent Balance, Dynix, running sendmail 4.12 - an HP9000-835, HP-UX, running sendmail 14.2 When mailing to one to the other, sendmail returns with: reply: read error Deferred: Host is down The messages remain in the mail queue, but on the HP the message is also returned to the sender. It contains the transcript of the session, and the message: ----- Transcript of session follows ----- sendmail: fransvo@maestro... reply: read error 451 fransvo@maestro... reply: read error 554 smtpquit IPC: stat 69 We have daemons running on both machines: /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q1h If you have hints on why this doesn't work, please mail them to us. We don't understand why this doesn't work. -- Frans van Otten | fransvo@maestro.htsa.aha.nl or Algemene Hogeschool Amsterdam | fransvo@htsa.uucp or Technische en Maritieme Faculteit | [[...!]backbone!]htsa!fransvo
