We just recently installed smail on our main mail gateway, which is a Sun 3 running 4.0.1. The person doing the configuration used a sendmail.cf that came with smail, and the result is that when I send mail to mdove@mips.com, smail turns it into boulder!ncar!ames!mips!mdove. My opinion is that what really should have happened is that the mail should have gone to a forwarding host (nbires is the site we used before) for forwarding to the Internet, and the address should have remained mdove@mips.com. Given what I know about the state of the UUCP maps at various times, I'm afraid to use these as anything but a last resort. Can someone point me to documentation for the "correct" configuration for us? If what we are doing is correct, I'd like an explanation of why we should trust the UUCP maps over the Internet domain system. -- David Elliott dce@Solbourne.COM ...!{boulder,nbires,sun}!stan!dce
