I am running sendmail 5.61 with a few net patches applied on a Sun 4/280 running OS 4.0.1 . I have encountered a problem with the error message return and queueing. The symptoms are that I send a message, and it fails with what should be a temporary error (the mailq command reveals that it failed with a "Bad file number" error). Unfortunately the message is left in the queue for another retry, AND it is bounced back to the sender! Since the message is still in the queue, 15 minutes later it runs, fails, and ANOTHER copy is bounced. I personally consider it a bug to both requeue AND bounce the message. Is this a known problem? Before I spend useless hours tearing into the source, has anyone got a patch for this? --Greg
