[comp.mail.sendmail] Mail advice

fail@fozzy.UUCP (Dennis Fail) (10/17/89)

Hello netters,

I am looking for some advice, experiences, gripes, or just general
information in configuring an e-mail system of unix boxes using sendmail
or whatever is appropriate.

First some background:
We have some 5+ domains of workstations consisting mostly of Sun boxes
(SunOs 4.0.3) with some HP's in there also. My main concern is configuring
sendmail and aliases and domains for local mail delivery. These domains
of workstations have their own server and yellow page domain and are
administered by different departments. They are all on the same
ethernet local area network and the hosts database is shared so everybody
knows about everbody else.

Mail aliases are maintained seperately in each domain by the different
administrators and some use NFS mail servers and some have it delivered
directly to the machine there on. Sure we can always say 'mail user1@machine1'
but we would like to say just 'mail user' and have it delivered to the right
place.

Some basic questions I would like some advise and experiences on are:

Should we have one alias file and share it between the different domains.
How much of a chore would it get to be to maintain such a file for 200+
users that have a tendacy to move around.

What should be the users role in maintaining their address

Should we go to one campus wide domain.

Should we enforce th user@machine type of addressing and leave the
responsibility to the user to see that his mail gets through.

Should we have one NFS mail server.

If we maintain separate aliases files how do we access them.

What role if any can a name server serve in local mail.

What role can invisible domains play in local mail.

DO I have all the software I need with the standard stuff shipped by the
vendor or do I need to look elsewere.

Should I expect to have to do some sendmail.cf hacking.

I have read all the documentation I have available and I have some ideas
but I would like to here from some people that have already gone through
the exercide of configuraing mail. I would like to do right this time.

Please email me any responses and I will summarize if there is any interest.

Thanks in advance
