[net.games.trivia] Question about flags and airplanes

joeloda@aicchi.UUCP (Joseph D. Loda) (05/16/85)

Well, here's a trivial one ...

While on vacation recently, I noticed that all the commercial airliners I saw
that had an American flag on it had the flag BACKWARDS! Why backwards? I
didn't think planes had rear view mirrors!

Anyone have an answer?

They usually paint them such that the staff end of the flag is on the
forward side of the ship, so that it would give the appearance of being
"blown" in the right direction in flight had it really been a flag.

This is more obvious on Greyhound busses. On an airplane you board on
the left side. The flag looks normal on that side. You board the bus
on the right side. The flag appears backward.
