[comp.mail.sendmail] Getting - Returned mail: unknown mailer error 1

robert@psych.psy.uq.oz (Robert Dal Santo) (01/17/90)

	Environement - sendmail5.61, mh6.6, SunOS 3.5

Whenever certain local mail items are queued instead of being
delivered (for whatever reason, load usually) it causes an error when
sendmail tries to process it at a later time by running the queue. The
mail is returned to the sender with the following -

>From MAILER-DAEMON Wed Jan 17 16:41:33 1990

Can anyone suggest what the problem is ? If the mail is delivered
immediately then there are no problems, its only when the item is queued and
delivery is attempted later during a queue run.

I saw similar problems here when we removed general read permission
from /dev/kmem and forgot to make /bin/mail setgid to group kmem.
/bin/mail will check, under certain circumstances, what the load
average is, for which it reads /dev/kmem. Your mailer may have
similar problems.
