Many thanks for the replies to solve the 'no host' problem. The fault was indeed the missing dollar sign in the rules.m4 file. I am puzzled as to how I ended up with a 'very early' version of UK-SENDMAIL, as I fetched it recently (weeks ago) from what appeared to be the 'definitive' site according to a list I have. Where is the latest 'definitely definitive' version? Further problems: 1. Our sun and apollo now get beyond the original halt, and appear to respond to the 'mail user@host' dialog fine. The problem is that the mail does not seem to get sent. It stays in the queue, and leaves sendmail processes hanging about. Using the -v option shows a dialog between the machines going fine until the dot to end the mail is sent. Then it just hangs. 2. I have managed to get SMTP mail into the SUN using the KA9Q package on a PC, with the present configuration of sendmail. I could not get mail to go in the reverse direction. This time -v option showed the PC to be unable to recognise the commands. (response to MAIL From:<addr> was 500 Command Unrecognised) Further help would again be much appreciated. The info-server at uk.ac.ic.doc has the definitive version. Unfortunately, the info-server at glasgow.cs still has these bugs because Jem Taylor disappeared without updating it. -Jim.

Havn't seen a reply to this bit so.... this hang on the tcp mailer is an "old bug" The line: Mtcp, P=[IPC], F=nsmFDMuXLC, S=22, R=22, A=IPC $h, E=\r\n had a spurious trailing space " " which you have to zap. -- Andrew.Macpherson@stl.stc.co.uk - or - Post@stl.stc.co.uk "Quot homines, tot sententiae"
