[comp.mail.sendmail] 386i sendmail questions

young@helix.nih.gov (Jeff Young) (11/06/90)

I've recently configured two 386i machines (take em they're yours) and among other problems mostly caused I`m sure by my own ignorance to the sun/unix world the sendmail is only partially working for either machine. Both machines were configureed as ypmaster servers. They are both on a large network but there aren't any other 386i's out there. One machine came up running sendmail.mx and was pretty much left alone as far as configuration goes. It isn't using DNS and therfore, I loaded a large /etc/host

file on it. This machine will not send mail to the outside world.

The other machine would not use DNS and would not use /etc/host until I killed off ypserv and ypbind. It will send mail out to its mailhost but will not deliver mail to its own accounts - it takes delivery and then it returns the mail to the sender. This machine is using sendmail and sendmail.subsidiary.cf. The machine will only send mail to the hosts that it knows about - I have to run xrn on another machine to get it to post.

If there is someone out there who could take the time, keeping in mind that these are the first and only sun machines that I have ever configured, to explain some of the finer points about sendmail, sendmail.mx, and domain name service, I would be grateful.

Of course, if I`m in the wrong group let me know.

thanks
