The version of sendmail which we run (5.59, under SunOS 4.0.3) has had some special code added by an erstwhile colleague to select a mailer. Among other things, this code searches for the existence of MX records to decide if a host can be contacted via smtp (or, if the host happens to lie within our "zone of authority", ignores mx records and simply calls gethostbyname). I was hoping to replace this custom version of sendmail with something more off-the-shelf, like the IDA version, but it seems that there is no provision for this kind of facility in the IDA version. Have I missed something obvious i.e. is there a "standard" way to decide if smtp is the mailer of choice without relying on the gross syntax of the address or just making it the default case? Do send me mail. Our newsfeed is being revised currently. If the question (and the replies) seems at all sensible, I'll post a summary.
