[net.games.trivia] SPEED RACER

tomoc (01/06/83)

I know for sure SPEED RACER was a Japanese cartoon that got English dubbed
into it. I`ve heard some of the characters voices on monster movies on the
order of Godzilla.

I got to thinking about the show and remember most of the characters.
Speed Racer, his older brother Rex (alias Racer X), his dad Pops, his
mom, his bratty little brother Spritle and his pet monkey Chim-Chim.
There was also the machanic, Sparky, and Speed`s girlfriend Trixie.

Then I made the fatal mistake of remembering all the added features of
the MACH 5. I`ve come up with 6, but I`m sure there`s at least 1 or 2
more. I came up with:

1. infrared headlights
2. automatic jacks - come in handy in jumping over things
3. a glass convertible top which allowed him to drive under water
4. a periscope - great for under water driving
5. a pair of circular saws that came out in front of the car
6. mini-wings - I`m not sure about this one

Can anyone tell me what feature(s) I`ve missed?

The MACH 5 also had self sealing tires and an oxygen supply that always
seemed to run out when Speed needed it most...

It's been pointed out that I left a verse or two out in my previous
posting . I can only plead a mind damaged by an overdose of Japanese
cartoons at an early age. Here is another, hopefully complete, version
of the lyrics to the Speed Racer Title Song:

	Here he comes
	Here comes Speed Racer
	He's a daemon on wheels.

	He's a daemon and he's gonna be
	chasing after someone.

He's gaining on you so you'd better look alive
He's busy revving up the powerful Mark V!
And when the odds are against him
and there's dangerous work (crunch crunch)

You bet your life Speed Racer
	will see it through

	Go, Speed Racer!
	Go, Speed Racer!
	Go, Speed Racer, Go!

He's almost flying as he guns the car around the track.
He's jamming down the channel like he's never coming back.
	Adventure's waiting just ahead!

	Go, Speed Racer!
	Go, Speed Racer!
	Go, Speed Racer, Go-o!

The functions of the buttons:

	A: Release remote-control bird
B?: Seal canopy for underwater operation
	C?: Extend winglets for long-distance jumps (?)
	D?: Raise TV periscope
	E?: Oxygen supply
	F?: Extra-traction thingies on tires
	G: Extend jacks and freeze-frame
	   (What, no horn?)

(By the way, I can't remember if this question was asked in net.tv or
net.games.trivia, but both groups seem to be off on an old TV animation
kick right now, so I can't be too far off.)

The meaning of the term "daemon on wheels" is left to the reader's
imagination. :-)

Does anyone or everyone out there remember the cartoon Speed Racer.

I would appretiate it if someone could tell me the letters and
corresponding functions on the MACH V steering wheel. You know,
the things that always got him out of a jam.

Also what was the name of the car acrobatic team, the one with
"snack" in it.

    A
  F B
    G
  E C
    D

A: Jump Car (like Knight Rider's Turbo Boost)
B: Tire Traction (for slippery terrain)
C: Powerful Headlights
D: Two saws come out of the front to remove any trees in his way
E: Airtight Roof (also activates several hour's worth of oxygen)
F: Periscope
G: Homing Bird

E and F are for when he takes the 'Powerful Mach V' underwater.
I may have gotten C and D reversed (it's been so long!).

Hah! I can't remember most of the suckers, but I do remember that
the letters were actually abbreviations, and that <A> stood for
"Automatic Jacks." Remember, the Mach 5 was a race car, and having
built-in jacks sure sped things up in the pits.

It was just a helpful side-effect that lowering the jacks when the
car was in motion made it jump over things...

BTW, for those of you in the S.F. Bay area, "Speed Racer" is on *really*
early in the Saturday A.M. on some pissant station. I seem to recall
it used to on in N.Y., too...probably if you truly want to watch it,
you can find it somewhere. (I could only take it for about three
minutes before I shut off the TV and went back to sleep...)
