I am having a problem with sendmail apparently mis-writing the From: header, although I'm not sure which machine is doing the mis-writing. A Sun ("Soaf1") and a '386 running SCO Xenix 2.3.2 ("oss753") are involved. oss753 is designated "mailhost" in Soaf1's sendmail.cf; oss753 has a UUCP link to the outside world. Mail coming into Soaf1 from the outside (UUCP) world has a Return-Path: header like this: Return-Path: <system1!system2!user@oss753> However, the Fron: header is: From: system2!user@oss753 In other words, "system1!" is being chopped off the front of the address. When replying to such messages, they are sent off to "system2!user@oss753". Since oss753 only knows about the outside UUCP world through its UUCP link to "system1" the message never gets any further that oss753. Question(s) is/are: Is Soaf1 rewriting headers incorrectly? What is the sendmail.cf rule to force oss753 to bounce everything it can't deliver to "system1" (the UUCP link)? Which sendmail.cf gets fixed, and how? (I'll be glad to e-mail copies of the two sendmail.cf's to anyone who wants to help, but don't want to post them.) Thanks. -- UUCP: {rutgers|ames|uunet}!mimsy!woodb!fallst!tkevans INTERNET: tkevans%fallst@wb3ffv.ampr.org Tim Evans 2201 Brookhaven Ct, Fallston, MD 21047

Looks as if someone who didn't understand what he was doing has been modifying your 'sendmail.cf' It is very difficult to tell what is the problem. The information is too confused. We have 'system1', 'system2', 'oss753', 'Soaf1', 'mailhost' as apparently 5 different names for two systems. Which is which? Hey, folks! If you write asking for assistance with problems, provide verbatim messages. Don't half conceal some of the names. So what if everyone knows the name of one of your hosts - what's the big deal. If you ever get the email working your host names will be displayed on the 'Received:' and 'Message-ID:' headers. If you really want privacy, forget email, write anonymous letters and stick a postage stamp on them. If you want email help provide the information necessary. -- =*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Neil W.
