[comp.mail.sendmail] sendmail on gateway machine with two hostnames

heiser@tdw201.ed.ray.com (02/12/91)

We have a machine that acts as a gateway between a network and a subnet.
As such, the machine has two IP addresses and two hostnames (sud507
and sud507-gw). When I send mail to user@sud507, it bounces back
with the following error:

Connected to sud507:
>>> HELO sud507-gw.ed.ray.com
<<< 553 sud507-gw.ed.ray.com host name configuration error
554 <heiser@sud507>... Service unavailable

If I send mail to sud507-gw, it goes through OK.

What's the best way to make mail to either hostname get routed correctly
to that machine? The machine is running SunOS 4.0.3, using Sun's
Sendmail.

Tips or suggestions would be appreciated. If more information would
help, let me know what you need.

Thanks,
Bill

The machine really should have one hostname, even if there are two IP
addresses. You are otherwise likely to run into split personality problems
with other software.

Notwithstanding the above, I will use email to assist you with your
configuration problem.
