I haven't checked the sendmail 5.65 source distribution yet to see if this happens there, but I suspect it will... This bug is known to exist in 5.61 . Because sendmail takes certain things for granted about mail to users whom it considers to be local, mail to an unknown user can be bounced twice. If you force the mail to be queued and errors to be mailed back (using the -odq and -oee option), an immediate rejection will be mailed back, but the mail will still be queued, resulting in a second error message getting mailed when the queue is run. This is a problem, since I isolate our mail system from the mail transport using these options. This way, the mail system is responsible for returning errors instead of the transport which may be as useless for returning errors as something like UREP (Unix Rscs Emulation Program). I don't think this can be easily fixed without tearing into the soft white underbelly of sendmail.
