Could someone tell me what sendmail.mx is for on a Sun 4.0.3 system? Is it a special version of sendmail that works with MX records? Just what are the differences between it and the normal sendmail? I haven't found any kind of documentation about sendmail.mx in the Sun manuals. Antonio Querubin tony@uhcmtg.phys.hawaii.edu

I just switched to using sendmail.mx instead of sendmail on a SUN system hoping that it would then be able to use MX records. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any difference between the two. Both sendmail.mx and sendmail return an unknown host error whenever I try to send mail to a host that has only an MX record. The sendmail binaries are the ones that came with SunOS 4.0.3. Is there something else that I need to do to make this work? In the process of testing sendmail.mx out, I also noticed a second problem common to both programs. The return-path header does not contain the fully-qualified hostname, it only contains the domainname. All the other headers are OK and otherwise everything seems to work fine. Shouldn't the return-path be equal to the full-name when I send to hosts outside of my domain (ie. shouldn't $g be equal to the full hostname in this case)? I'm using sendmail.main.cf as the template for sendmail.cf. I've changed it to send mail directly to other Internet hosts rather than automatically punt the message to a relay (except for bitnet mail). I also have the following defined: Dj$w Cm phys phys.hawaii phys.hawaii.edu Would appreciate any insights. Thanks! Antonio Querubin tony@uhcmtg.phys.hawaii.edu
