[net.games.trivia] Cool Hand Luke -- plastic Jesus

gnw@mtsbb.UUCP (G.N.WEBER) (08/14/85)

Dear North America,

In the movie "Cool Hand Luke", Paul Newman (as Luke) plays the
banjo and sings a song after his mother dies. This song opens
with the line "Get yourself a plastic Jesus... for the dashboard
of your car". Also included in the song are references to "Virgin
Mary", "sweet Madonna", and "colors pind and irridescent". If
someone could tell me the name of this song and a recording of it
I would be very happy.

"Sometime nuthin' is a real cool hand -- Paul Newman"
"What we have here is a failure to communicate -- prison boss in C.H.L."

I don't know the name but I know some of the lyrics:

I don't care if it rains or freezes,
long as I got my plastic Jesus,
sittin' on the dashboard of my car,
he never slips and he never slides,
		'cause his ass is magnetized,
sittin' on the dashboard of my car.

I hear this song regularly on the Dr. Demento Radio Show. The version
I hear is "Plastic Jesus" by the Gold Coast Singers.

The song is "Plastic Jesus" by Ernie Mars. Written about the mid
'60s. I can't recall who recorded it. I'm adding net.music to
to distribution, perhaps someone there has more details.

Folks, I've been waiting years to find out what the lyrics are.
Keep those cards & letters coming. Let me add the following:

I don't care if it rains or freezes,
long as I got my plastic Jesus,
sittin' on the dashboard of my car,
Comes in colors pink and pleasant,
Shines at night 'cause it's iridescent.
Take it with me when I travel far...

		All I want's a sweet Madonna
Crown of gold and (robes?) upon 'er
(sitting on the dashboard of my car?)

Sounds to me like the lines about "ass" belong in the first stanza
and the lines about "pink" belong in the second. Hope I jogged
someone's memory as I am anxious to get the definitive version of
these lyrics! :-) Adele

There's another version of 'Plastic Jesus' I've heard. In NYC Don Imus
a DJ used to play something like this:

I don't care if it rains or freezes
as long as I got my plastic Jesus
riding on the dashboard of my car.
I can go a hundred miles an hour
as long as I have that almighty power
right up there by my pair of fuzzy dice.

Well, I think it's close to what I heard...
