(Hello again) Here's a problem we're really stuck on... this is sendmail 5.61 as distributed with Interactive Unix V2.2 (System V 3.2). The sendmail.cf file is happy as a clam. It decides that addresses on machines on our local network should be sent with mailer "ether", defined as: Mether, P=[IPC], F=emsuCDFLMX, S=11, R=21, A=IPC $h However, the log reveals that sendmail thinks that the host is "unknown": Apr 5 15:55:29 localhost sendmail[200]: AA00198: to=erf@xyzzy, delay=00:00:00, stat=Host unknown But: host xyzzy is in /etc/hosts, we have NO nameserver running, /etc/resolv.conf contains the single word "nonameserver", tcp-ish commands like "ping", "rcp" and "rlogin" all understand and can connect to host xyzzy, as well as all other hosts in the hosts file. We've restarted the sendmail daemon, re-frozen the configuration file, and even offered a burnt sacrifice, but nothing seems to help. I should also add that the configuration file detects local hosts properly, so that erf@xyzzy uses the "ether" mailer but erf@unknown_host gets sent to a gateway machine. Can anyone out there help us??? This is getting very frustrating, and we're about to hard all sharp objects in the area so we don't hurt ourselves. Please E-MAIL any replies to: ericf@zurich.ai.mit.edu Thanks in advance for any and all help! -EricF

For the time being, we have substituted the sendmail version that was supplied with Interactive 2.0.2. We are using everything else exactly the same as with the newer sendmail. We find that the older version has no problem sending mail through the ether mailer. The problem with using the older version is that sendmail gets locked up from time to time and does not receive incoming mail over tcp/ip.
