[comp.mail.sendmail] Query about UK-Sendmail 2.1

steve@mrc-apu.cam.ac.uk (Steve Platt) (04/15/91)

Having just set about trying to "upgrade" from 1.4a to 2.1, I wonder
if anyone can explain what is going on ... this is under SunOS 4.1 BTW.

One problem is that the base.m4 file contains rather old pathnames
to aliases and sendmail.st (ie /usr/lib) - which makes me wonder if
there is a more recent version of UK-Sendmail than 2.1 around ...
(I just got ours from glasgow.cs).

The other problem relates to "Domcheck" and our local Chemistry dept!
The domain table file for "uk.ac.cam" contains several lines for
"ch.cam.ac.uk" - perhaps one per NRS-registered machine?
Fair enough, Domcheck reports duplicate entries for "ch" and "chemistry".
It also, as we expect, reports a clash with "CH" (Switzerland) in the
top-level domain file. Fair enough, who needs to talk to Chemists?

What puzzles me is that if I remove the duplicate "ch" lines in the
"uk.ac.cam" file, leaving just one, and re-run Domcheck; it now no longer
reports the conflict with CH in the top-level domain - shouldn't it?

One other minor irritation; we have the "$%y" construct in our local
domain file, as suggested in the User Guide but were sad to find that
a similar entry in the ether-channel table didn't seem possible.
Has anyone got around that?

Thanks in advance - Steve Platt
