[comp.mail.sendmail] address parsing problems...help...

ross@fdurt1.FDU.EDU (Jeff Ross) (04/17/91)

I am currently running Ultrix 4.1 along with the sendmail that was
shipped with this version of ultrix. I am having a few minor (major??)
problems with the .cf file.

The system that has the problem is fdurt1.fdu.edu (also known as
fdurt1.UUCP) the machine has uucp, tcp/ip and decnet connections.

the problem seems only to be with uucp mail or any mail that uses the
"!" syntax, but this doesn't effect all mail in this format,
fdurt1.fdu.edu will properly handle mail that arrives to it in to syntax
of "qualified_hostname!username" but not
"qualified_hostname!uucp_host!username" sendmail for some reason on the
second example will ignore the first hostname in the line and attempt to
send mail to the second machine on the list. since I probably don't
have a direct connection to that uucp host, the mail will bounce.

however, (i'm going to use uunet.uu.net as an example host) if I where
to address the mail as such:

uunet.uu.net!uunet.uu.net!uucp_host!user sendmail will first rewrite
the address as:

uunet.uu.net!uucp_host!user@uunet.uu.net and send the message to
uunet.uu.net via tcp/ip.

if I understand the addressing corectly, the address
uunet.uu.net!uucp_host!user should be rewritten as
uucp_host!user@uunet.uu.net even though that does seem to be slightly
ambigous.

the senario is true for mail send directly from fdurt1.fdu.edu or passed
to it via uucp.

the next item that I'd like to get working is to forward all unknown
uucp traffic to another site (preferably via tcp/ip) for processing.
Digital does comment a macro for this use, but I have only been able to
get it to work for any uucp address with a .UUCP on the end. did I miss
something??

lastly we have a few machines connected to fdurt1.fdu.edu via uucp only
and would like to provide them with a qualified domain name. If I
understand correctly, I would have to set up an MX record on my
nameserver saying that fdurt1.fdu.edu will handle the mail for these
machines, however, how do I tell sendmail to convert this mail from
tcp/ip to uucp??

if you want to see my sendmail.cf file, just holler and I'll send it your
way..

thanks in advance....

				Jeff
