[comp.mail.sendmail] Sendmail Configuration problem

ADMINSYS@LIBRARY.SHEFFIELD-CITY-POLY.AC.UK (Dave Haywood) (04/30/91)

Dear all,

I don't seem to be able to configure sendmail to do what I want:

We have a sun which we would like to act as a site mail hub. We would like it
to recognise its own address as SCP.AC.UK. We would also like it to recognise
its own name as ASH.SCP.AC.UK. We have some local hosts on ethernet but we
also have two hosts which can only be reached on X25.

                             JANET
                               |
       vmt.scp.ac.uk-----x25---|----x25------- lib.scp.ac.uk
                               |
                              x25
                               |
                         ash.scp.ac.uk
                           (gateway)
                               |
                        --------------
                        | |
                   ether-hosts ether-hosts

So far, we seem to have mail to SCP.AC.UK and ASH.SCP.AC.UK and our local
ethernet hosts working fine. The problem is in getting ASH to relay mail to
the X.25 hosts via JANET.

Using the -bt test option, sendmail rejects mail to LIB.SCP.AC.UK (an X25 only
host) with "local domain unknown" since it is not in the ether channel file.
If we remove SCP.AC.UK from the local channel file, then all our local hosts
(both ether and X25) seem to be accessible, but the hub no longer recognises
itself as SCP.AC.UK, and attempts to forward such mail to the janet channel.

Is there a way around this, or am I attempting to combine two mutually
exclusive options?

One further problem:

We kept getting problems with addresses being expanded when they should not :-
eg UK.AC.NRS was expanded to UK.AC.NRS.AC.UK. This problem did not occur when
we used the example tables provided in the package (glasgow's tables). The
crucial line seems to be

uk ean-relay.ac.uk

in the top.dom file. When I added this line to our tables, the problem went
away, and UK.AC.NRS was not expanded to UK.AC.NRS.AC.UK. However, the
ean-relay does not seem to appear in the final fqdn. Why is line necessary if
the relay is not used?

Please reply direct - I'm not on the list.
Thanks, Roderick Douglas / Dave Haywood.

[ I do not use UK-2.1 so this may be miles off - this is experience
from UK-1.4++ ]

You probably need to list your two X.25-only hosts explicitly in
<machine>.janet.chn:

uk.ac.scp.odd1	uk.ac.scp.odd1
uk.ac.scp.odd2	uk.ac.scp.odd2
