[comp.mail.sendmail] Redistributing mail by username

fillmore@SUN2.EMR.CA (Bob Fillmore) (05/15/91)

I would like to know what would be the most efficient way for a mail gateway
machine to redistribute mail by username. We would like most mail coming in
from the Internet to come to a common machine, which would examine the user
name part of the address and decide which host to forward it to. I presume
a list of sendmail rules could be set up, one rule per username, but I suppose
this will slow down sendmail quite a bit. The other possibility would be to
register each username as a user of the mail gateway and set up .forward files
to redistribute the mail, but this causes more administrative overhead on the
gateway machine.

Any ideas? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my naive question. Everyone reminded
me of the aliases feature - I had forgotten that it would work for general
mail redistribution.

Thanks again- Bob Fillmore
