hi there, i'm a novice sys admin with an old HP9000s300 running a very recently installed HP-UX 7.0 ... users on the system can send mail to each other just fine, but when another host attempts to send mail it gets errors like : ----- Transcript of session follows ----- While connected to foghorn.sfsu.edu [130.212.10.100] (tcp): >-> HELO foghorn <<< 553 foghorn I refuse to talk to myself 554 <chance@foghorn.SFSU.EDU>... Sent i'm perplexed as the verbose mail from the remote host looks like it sent the message properly, yet it gets returned with the criptic "i refuse to talk to myself" message. Is this machine a recalcitrant schizo, haunted by Rod Sefling, or just suffering from an inadequate configuration ? does anyone out there have any ideas ? any and all comments will be greatly appreciated. e-mail directly to chance@sfsu.edu or post. thanks much in advance ... -- jon

You will have to make some changes in 'sendmail.cf' so that the local mailer is selected for any of: user, user@foghorn, user@foghorn.sfsu.edu Try running 'sendmail -bt' and running these addresses through ruleset 0. I can't tell you exactly what you need to change. It might be as simple as defining $D or $M to be your domain. Or it might just be a matter of getting domainname() correct. Most vendors put a few comments in sendmail.cf to help with the initial setup. -- =*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Neil W.
