[comp.binaries.apple2] ACS Demo: what in blazes is it???!!?!?

mrharrison@trillium.waterloo.edu (Mike Harrison) (11/29/89)

Before I waste time downloading this multi-part ACS demo, I'd sure like
to know what it is I'm downloading. What the hell is it??? And how much
memory does it take? It sure doesn't take much effort to post this at the
top of the first file.

	* I TOTALLY AGREE*

I get really annoyed when I download something, run it
through Binscii, etc. and find it's only for the GS!!

	Other times I don't download because I haven't the
faintest idea what the program is or what it does :(

	DISCLAIMER:
The above most definitely may be my opinion, but you can be
sure that it also could be yours if you would like it to be.
If you find it is yours, you can be sure that I agree with
you and that, in my opinion, you too have good taste and
are obviously right just as I am.

I downloaded it, and here is what it is:

It's a graphics animation demo for the Apple IIGS. It uses some of
the trickier animation techniques, such as border color swapping and
palette switching, to achieve some interesting effects. There are
a dozen or so different demos, including a fake HAM (hold and modify)
mode that is on the lame side. (HAM is the 4096 color mode on the Amiga).

There are some impressive letter scrolling demos. The scrolling is very,
very smooth. Some of the scrolls have interesting expansion effects (kind
of like the letters are being stretched). The graphics work is very good,
too...good use of color. There are many variations on the scroll, and some
"sprite" animation demos along with some game-like sequences.

It appears to use some routines of dubious originality...for example, the
ACS logo swooshing onto the screen looks like a rip-off of the FTL boot on
Dungeonmaster GS. There is a cheesy Arkanoid screen, with animated shapes
and balls and paddles.

You have to reset to exit each demo...sort of annoying, but perhaps neccessary
to achieve the level of animated fluidity exhibited by these programmers.

Err... did I miss it too or has a description of the ACS demo still not
been posted?

I'd like to try it out but since it has many many parts (requiring a little
while at 2400 plus the binscii time, etc) which would create an unpleasant
surprise if it was another utility that duplicates something I currently
have:-)

Thanks in advance
