Here's a freeware shell utility to append one or more files to another file.
This utility is really a replacement for the JOIN utility in the ORCA/APW
shell, which will only join two files making a third, and which also does not
work properly (for me at least) with binary files.  In the event of an error
while appending, APPEND will truncate the output file to the last byte appended
from the last file appended without error.

The C source is provided in the archive, including a procedure to expand   
filenames containing wildcards (yes, append respects wildcards), and a procedureto truncate files to a specified length given their C FILE pointer variable.
Note that the source for ftrunc includes "nstdio.h", which is the same as the
stdio.h header provided with ORCA C, but with typedef on line 44 changed to
get the "struct file *next" to compile proprly.
