Forgive me if I'm in the wrong newsgroup, but... Of all the programs for my Apple ][GS which I download, both from this newgroup and from various anonymous FTP sites, I am only able to successfully run about 20% of them. Sometimes I'm thrown into the Monitor with the machine language instruction "BRK C2", and other times I get the "Cannon run. Please try again" screen with the error being identified as $110A. The problem with running any program which fails is almost invariably one of these two. What am I doing wrong? I got my computer a few years ago, soon after the GS model was released, and I have made no enhancements (such as operating system) since that time other than getting a memory expansion card (only 256K extra at this point). Also, assuming I eventually resolve this problem, can anybody suggest a good program for a) displaying $C1 graphics screens and b) playing sound files? (I know SoundSmith is the usual choice, however I think that my measly 512K cannot handle it.) Thanks in advance, Sean

In article <10847@jarthur.Claremont.EDU> smcafee@jarthur.claremont.edu (Sean McAfee) writes: >What am I doing wrong? Probably the real problem is that the applications do not gracefully handle the situation of not having sufficient memory to operate. (The error code $110A may or may not be directly related to the real source of the problem. I would look it up except my reference books are elsewhere at the moment.) 512KB is certainly considered skimpy for IIGS desktop applications, some of which absolutely require at least 1.25MB. Of course, the use of desk accessories further reduces the amount of memory available for an application. You should also be aware that many public and even commercial software products such as desk accessories and "init" files, even fonts, have been known to interfere with the operation of applications. In theory, if they are correctly implemented, they should peacefully coexist, but experience has shown that you should not rely on that. So it is often worthwhile in tracking down such problems to remove or deactivate all add-on software, reboot, and see if the problems persist.

comp.sys.apple2 is the better place for this kind of info however..... $110a is Illegal Load Record Found and is generated by InitialLoad or InitialLoad2. I would bet that the program requires systems 5.0 to be run and is a format only system 5 can use. ShrConvert can display $c1 graphics screens and is about the best choice of the PD programs. Soundsith requires at 768k of memory and this without the MIDI tools present, I use version .7 since it does not require the MIDI tools and I do not like disabling all of my DA and inits just to get the thing to boot on my 1.25Meg GS. You will require two things if you wish to continue using your GS productively, System 5.0.4 (available from ftp sites they say) and much more memory. I would suggest getting a third party card (Harris is my first choice, Chinnook second), My Apple card is fully loaded and I still need more memory. An extra 512k will get you through til you can afford a larger card, but it will largely be useless in the future. Hope this helps, and see you on comp.sys.apple2. I hope I'm posting to the right group. Here's the problem. I have some fortran source on an Apple II disk. I need to be able to get the source to one of our computers. We have suns macs, vaxes and ibm pcs networked together but absolutely no apple II's. Can any of you upload files? I mean do you access the internet from your Apple IIs? If I sent you a diskette, could you upload it and mail me the code? Am I asking too much? Please e-mail your response. Thanks in advance... Melody hancock@aerospace.aero.org
