Georgia Tobin discusses (very briefly) an aspect of font scaling in Tugboat Vol 7, no 2. She illustrates the effect of scaling a 48 pt font to a 12 point on the ratio of ascender to descender height. Visually the ratio appears to change, when of course it doesn't in reality. Thus, the computer modern fonts change the ratio in the metafont input so that the ratio is visually the same across point sizes. This also brings up why "true" computer modern fonts cannot be converted to outlines for scaling on postscript devices, since "true" computer modern fonts are not scaled!
