[comp.fonts] Where can I learn about typography?

dstalder@gmuvax2 (Darren Stalder) (04/13/88)

I am quite willing to learn much more about typesetting and font
design and related topics but I dont know where to look. The graphics
arts department here concentrates on other areas. I know about the
book on recognizing typefaces and the magazines that Richard Furuta
posted through Ken Yap. (Thanks people!)

Any other references would be highly appreciated.

I would do my best to compile a list, either from suggestions e-mailed
to me at one of:

   anderson@vms.macc.wisc.edu
   anderson@wiscmacc[.bitnet]
   [backbone]!uwvax!vms.macc.wisc.edu!anderson

or from postings carrying the subject line "Getting Wise About Type"
in this newsgroup.

What would be best is Author, Title, Publisher, Date and a 2-3 line
terse comment on the content/value of each title. Let's try to
limit it to first-rate books that are fairly readily available.

I'll collect data for three weeks (I'll be out of town 4/28-5/5),
then post what I have accumulated by then.
