[comp.fonts] Request for font-related books

john@titan.nmt.edu (John Shipman) (04/14/88)

I'd like to order a few core references on fontmaking for our library.
Can anyone recommend some books? I'm interested in books on font
identification, font aesthetics, history of font design, and so on,
and our library has virtually nothing on the topic.

Some students here want a METAFONT course (or directed study). These
students think they've mastered TeX (they haven't, of course---after
four years of heavy use setting two 500-page books, I wouldn't say
*I've* mastered it). I keep telling them that font design is not
something to be undertaken lightly, but they're freshmen and tend to
ignore statements from their elders on how hard some things can be.

METAFONT, however, looks more daunting than TeX, given METAFONT's
emphasis on math, especially geometry. Anyone taught a course on
METAFONT? Any suggestions?
