[comp.fonts] Available fonts

hmm@laura.UUCP (Hans-Martin Mosner) (04/12/88)

I have been looking for grayscale fonts for some time now. I ultimately want
to use them in our not-yet-existing Smalltalk-80 port for the ABAQ, but in
the meantime I'd like to play around with them on a Mac II. Does anyone have
pointers to companies who sell such fonts, or even better, pointers to PD
grayscale fonts ? I have experimented a bit with some sample characters, and
maybe I could construct a simple grayscale font out of a larger bitmap font,
but I think that using a well-designed font would be a bit better than that.

	cheers,
	Hans-Martin

Regarding greyscale bitmap fonts for the Mac II:

There is something serious happening here. Cricket is having a war with
one of the slide film priting companies over anti-aliased fonts.
Everybody wants to have this technology ready first on the Mac II.

I have seen and have some color fonts for the Mac II, that appear to exist in
the public domain. They include 30-36 points sizes of: Vice, Shades, Zebra,
and Embossed.

Several Type houses are preparing multibit fonts for the Mac II, but are all
being very quiet.

About getting somebody who's an expert on typography in here:

I know some former employees of Bitstream (now running their own place) whom
I may be able to get in here. It invluves getting them access to Usenet. One
of their employees has access, so this might happen, but don't hope too much.

If anybody has _any_ multibit fonts for the Mac II (i.e. NFNTs in any size
or type, color or greyscale) I'll take 'em! I have been dying to get a
replacement for Chicago done in 8 bit or 24-bit, but nobody has a program
to allow multibit font design on the Mac. If you can help, let me know.
