[comp.fonts] Mac downloadable fonts

greid@ondine.COM (Glenn Reid) (08/11/88)

Well, since I sent a long message, I should probably field the
questions, too. Forgive me if none of this is of interest.

None. The interpreter doesn't do the decryption. It is part of the
  communications filter, sort of.

You don't. If they are on the hard disk in the L-300 or other
printer, then they do not need to be downloaded.

The screen fonts are used to compose the document, of course,
and the FOND resource contains the PostScript name of the font.
The Printing Manager determines at print time whether or not the
printer has the font (it does look on the hard disk). It only
downloads the font from your System folder if it can't find it
on the printer. Some of us at Adobe use this setup, and nobody
has any fonts in their own System folders.

I don't know enough to comment on how smart the screen font manager
is, but I do know that the less information the application has, the
more guesswork goes into line layout, and you can get some spacing
surprises if you don't have the right width tables (which are part
  of the FOND resources).

Recommendation: keep the screen fonts, delete the System folder fonts,
and put them all on the hard disk in your printer.
