[comp.fonts] Introduction to the mims-iris font archive

tom@mims-iris.waterloo.edu (Tom Haapanen) (09/14/89)

Now that the archive server message got posted, I had to get my act
in gear and get the archive setup finished. Thanks go to G.L. Sicherman
and Richard Sexton for their help. Anyway, there are lots of LaserJet
fonts there; feel free to browse around...

Introduction to the mims-iris font archive
	    ------------------------------------------
			129.97.129.116

The mims-iris font archive is intended to provide access to soft fonts
for laser printers. The emphasis of the archive is on the Hewlett-
Packard LaserJet printers, but some fonts are also provided for other
laser printers and VGA displays on PC-compatible systems.

ARCHIVE STRUCTURE
You can find fonts in the following subdirectories:
	fonts/lj	LaserJet fonts
	fonts/ps	PostScript fonts
	fonts/qms	QMS fonts
	fonts/vga	VGA screen fonts
	fonts/util	Font manipulation utilities
Each directory contains a file, INDEX, which describes each file
in the said directory. All files are in binary mode, and have been
compressed with compress(1) using a 14-bit maximum (to provide PC
compatability). Some utilities have been compressed with either zoo
or arc.

NEW FONTS
The font archive is continuously being updated. Retrieve either the ls-lR
file in the root directory or the INDEX file in the appropriate sub-
directory to check for new submissions.

FONTS WANTED
To make the archive useful for everybody, please submit any public domain
or freely distributable fonts that you have. Also, if you use a font
editor or another utility to create additional sizes and/or styles of
existing fonts, do submit them! (Of course for good results any automatic
size or style changes should be hand-tuned in a font editor).

Also, font utilities are highly desired. The archive contains the QuickFont
font editor, but another, more capable, font editor is badly desired. If
you have any comments or suggestions regarding the utilities, please send
them to tom@mims-iris.waterloo.edu.

NEW SUBMISSIONS
If you wish to submit fonts or tools, place them in directory
new New submissions to the archive
and include a note (or a .doc file) explaining the contents of the submission.

PROBLEMS
I have attempted to make sure that all fonts will download correctly and
print on the LaserJet II. If you are unable to get a font working, drop
me a note. However, first, make sure that:
	- You set 'binary' on in ftp
	- You make the transfer (if any) to your PC/Mac in binary mode
If you're unsure whether the second one worked, transfer the file back to
UN*X from your PC and use cmp(1) to check whether the file is still intact.

The LaserJet fonts are compatible with the following printers
	HP LaserJet +
	HP LaserJet 500
	HP LaserJet II
	HP LaserJet IID
	... and 100% compatibles!
