[comp.fonts] ADOBE POSTSCRIPT Font handling secret is out?

cos842x@vaxc.cc.monash.edu.au (09/27/89)

News is ADOBE will reveil their secret encryption of their POSTSCRIPT
font handling, announced Warnock at the Seabold Desktop Publishing
conferenece in San Francisco, recently.
This has been brought about as the Font war entensified between
APPLE/MICROSOFT and ADOBE.

Can anyone confirm or deny this news ???

PLEASE, PLEASE if anyone have any news of the ADOBE 'secrets', please
let me know.

Thank you,

I also heard (from friends who were at the Seybold show) that Adobe
will be releasing its main font format to the public. My friends'
impression was that it was going to take Adobe a few months to get
around to it, though. Don't expect miracles; Adobe is still getting
used to the idea that not only does it not own desktop imaging, it
doesn't even own PostScript, a language that they put into the public
domain to encourage use, and then failed to properly price and
support.

While I am no fan of either Microsoft or Apple, and wish to thank the
originators of PostScript for that unique act of creation, I can't say
that Adobe has been friendly to its users or potential users over the
last few years. They thought they could get away with being hard-ass
about a bunch of things, like source code, use on screens, fonts, etc
-- and they were wrong.
