I would like to put together a system for creating vinyl lettering and signs. I have some information on the CAMM-1 vinyl cutter from Roland. The CAMM-1 is basically a moving paper pen plotter set up with a cutter to cut designs into adhesive backed vinyl material. I understand that it can also bu used to cut sand-blast material for wood relief signs. The CAMM-1 can be connected RS232-C and has HPGL emmulation capabilities. My questions are: 1) What computer should I use - IBM compatible or Mac? My personal preference is Mac but I am setting up this system for my father and sister who have little experience with either system. 2) HPGL software: What software exists for either system that will output HPGL commands? Since the CAMM-1 is a cutter, I need to send commands to draw (cut) outlines. The basic requirement is to be able to cut letters so the availability of several "outline" fonts is required. The ability to create new fonts or to convert other fonts, such as PostScript, to HPGL is desired. The ability to create other artwork for the cutter is also required. 3) Other cutters: I have the CAMM-1 brochure from Roland. I know that Gerber also makes cutters. Motorola used XYnetics plotters "many" years ago to cut rubylith for IC mask making. Does anyone know what hardware besides Roland exists for cutting vinyl sign material. Remember that this will be a small operation so I would like to keep the cost down. The Roland CAMM-1 list for about $4500.
