We want to put a cyrillic font on the NeXT machine. Has anyone tried porting an existing type 3 font to the NeXT? Under Display PostScript, one needs (1) the outline routines and (2) the AFM (Adobe font metric) file. I assume these are available from Mac vendors. Display PS also can make use of bitmaps for representing characters on-screen at sizes less than 24 points. Has anyone generated such bitmaps on the NeXT, either from scratch or by porting them from the Mac? Are there any utilities for such porting? there are at least two vendors who offer cyrillic fonts for the Mac. Hence I'm wondering if anyone knows about moving Mac postscript fonts (type 3 or even type 1) over to Display PS. thanks very much Malcolm Brown Stanford University

We've done this with a few fonts under the DECWindows Display PostScript extension -- the procedure should be essentially the same, since the core interpreter is essentially the same. We had the additional task of cobbling up BDF files for the bitmaps -- some information that BDF expects isn't present in the Mac format. The biggest problem we ran into is the Fontographer likes to produce fonts that define things in userdict. This is a nono, but works on a printer. It doesn't do anything good in DPS. -- Chris Kent Western Software Laboratory Digital Equipment Corporation kent@decwrl.dec.com decwrl!kent (415) 853-6639
